Starting out
Origami is an art of paper folding, therefore all you should need is a piece of paper and you can start folding away without any problems, right? Well, almost. You might need a few other things that we will talk about in this chapter.
Aside from the materials, we are also going to show you some of the basic folds, and how to read the directions of many of the patterns that you can find.
Materials
In origami, you might not just need paper - it always depends on how far you want to take your creations. Here are some of the tools in you should have in the toolbox:
Paper
Foil Backing
Scissors or blades
Glues and paints and other craft goods
Paper
You can almost use any type of paper in any color that you want. But, in order to make your origami fun and not frustrating, it might be best to use standard printer paper. If you use thinner paper, you might tear or wear out the sheets. If you use heavier paper, it might not be the easiest to work with, and the folds get more difficult to make as the paper folds over itself.
Some of the different kinds of paper you might want to use are:
Colored bond paper (standard printer paper in a color)
Colored construction paper
Newspaper
Plain white paper
Commercial origami paper
Colored and plain white bond paper can be bought inexpensively for just a few dollars and most of your basic origami creations can be made with this paper. You can also use construction paper, but it is heavier, and you won’t have a lot of luck doing wet folding.
Many experienced origami enthusiasts will use commercial origami paper. This kind of paper is slightly lighter than standard bond paper, but it is actually more durable than its bond counterpart.
One of the other advantages of using commercial origami paper is the fact that it is only colored on one side. The opposite side of this origami paper is white. This is extremely helpful if you are designing or building dual-colored pieces like a zebra, for instance.
Foil backing
This isn’t a major item in origami, until you get into more intricate designs. Many experienced origami artists use foil back paper for certain items that you aren’t going to be able to fold with regular paper. These items might include: antennae on insect designs, and possibly small legs on any of the other creatures that tickle your fancy.
You can usually find foil backed paper in a craft store and it can quite expensive. Some people make their own (quite inexpensively) but it can be messy, as it involves using craft glue and aluminum foil wrap along with tissue paper to give you the same kind of look.
Scissors and blades
Although traditionalists might have a problem with using scissors and blades to help cut paper, it does have to happen sometimes. With that said, it rarely has to happen when you are doing the actual design of the origami piece.
Many of the origami patterns call for a square piece of paper, and unless you get commercial origami paper, you might have to cut your own to size. A good pair of scissors or an artist’s blade and a straight edge will do the trick.

The only difference will be that this type of paper will be based on features which should normally go into the title paper. What is particular about every title paper is that it should be seen as a single feature in the whole research paper. But in this case, the whole paper will have to consist only of the title page. This is not a strange thing. Starting and completing this type of paper should be taken very seriously. This is because very little will be used to create so much.
There will normally be a topic for this type of paper. There are two ways in which the topic for this paper may come about. In the first case, you may be asked to select a topic. When this is the case, you should be ready to launch your search into an area in which you have complete knowledge of. Remember that you will be required to prove mastery of your research and this is only possible if you have firsthand knowledge about what you are writing on. In the second case, the teacher may decide to select the topic for you. You should be very critical about the topic if you intend to know all the requirements of the topic. This can be done by questioning the topic. You may ask help from your teacher if you face difficulties in knowing what the topic is all about.
Before you start the write-up, take a look at other term papers. Keep in mind that it may be difficult to begin and complete the term paper without gaining inspiration from other writers. There should be nothing bad in drawing strength from the works of others. But make sure that you duly acknowledge the source of your inspiration. You should also endeavor to make your work original. It should not look like a replication of the work of another writer.
Title page of term paper will also vary according to the disciplines in which the writer is found. For example, the MLA research and writing rules may not ask for a title page as the APA will do. But this should not mean you may not be asked to produce a title page when using the MLA guidelines. You should also know the special and general requirements for writing the title page. It is obvious that the title page must have the title of the work, the name of the writer or researcher, the name of the supervisor, the name or code of the course and the date in which the writing or research was completed. All these will have to be presented on separate lines. They will also have to be double-spaced and centered. This may not be the same for every curriculum. Therefore, the student has to find out what obtains in his or her curriculum.

There comes a time in our lives when it becomes necessary to express your opinion or alternate position on paper, whether it be for a school assignment, a letter to the editor, a memo suggesting new company policy, or just an e-mail to your sibling explaining an opposing viewpoint. No matter which form this may take, the challenge of writing an argumentative reply will be more successful if a specific formula is applied. This formula allows you to state your opinion, acknowledge the opposition, maintain diplomacy, and gain the respect of your target audience. Before beginning, research both sides of the issues so you will be prepared to answer your critics and present yourself as a knowledgeable participant. If this is a school assignment, there may be other criteria that must be included, so be sure to understand the scope of the paper so you will cover all of the bases.
The initial undertaking when attempting this feat will be to create an outline consisting of three parts. Using the formula PRS…Present, Rebut, Summary. Each of these three areas will be discussed below. Good spelling, grammar and sentence structure is vital for your article to be taken seriously. Have someone proofread the paper to get some input as to the flow of information, and consider suggestions that they may offer.
Present. In the opening paragraph, you should explain the nature of the situation you are arguing. Point out the major issues that divide opinions. Express the validity of your opponent’s views and allow the reader to understand why this position may be held in popular belief. This will demonstrate that you understand both sides of the argument and are not just trying to cause turmoil. Finally, suggest that there may be a better alternative or approach.
Rebuttal. The next paragraph will be the rebuttal in which you will offer an alternate way of approaching the problem. State your cause. Be very clear and concise so there is no misunderstanding about your position. Offer facts, data, or resources to reinforce your ideas. Explain the benefits of your proposition, but keep your thoughts focused. Avoid adding material that has little effect to the outcome. You may be attempting to sway popular opinion so you must be persuasive as well as thorough. Do not hesitate to include opposing arguments to your view, but be prepared to address these issues. Allow your reader to clearly understand both viewpoints, but keep in mind that you are asking them to examine and accept your ideas.
Summarize. Recap the previous sections by restating your opinions, explain what drew you to these conclusions. Focus your attention on the materials you presented, and challenge your readers to form their own views based on your argument.
You now have the basic formula for how to write argumentative papers. This method allows you to express your opinion as a well-informed participant whose ideas must be taken seriously. You will gain the respect of your adversaries, the support of colleagues, and may change a few minds as to the way a problem can be addressed.

This paper comes in sheets 8 1/2 by 11 inches and can be cut to frame the size of the photo. There are several brands of glossy paper available at retailers in your hometown.
Another type of photo printer paper available to consumers is the matte finish paper, commonly used by professional photography studios. The problem with inkjet paper is not a lack of choice. Not at all. Where most people feel utterly confused is with the huge variety of inkjet papers on the market today. Which paper is which?
The choices are mind boggling. Plain paper, heavy plain paper, glossy, matte, super glossy, t-shirt transfer, bright white, business card paper, recycled…. well the list just goes on and on.
Which inkjet paper is right for you? Ask a salesman that question and he’ll pick up the fanciest, most expensive paper he can find and hand it to you. A far more important question to ask yourself is “What do I want to achieve with my inkjet paper?” Your wants and needs are very different things. We always tend to want the more expensive item when in reality we only need the plain jane model.
Your first consideration is paper weight. All printer paper, inkjet included, is measured in gsm or grammes per square meter. A very lightweight paper for your inkjet printer would be 60gsm. When you walk into any store and buy a ream (500 sheets) of inkjet paper you’ll find that the stock on display is 80gsm. This is a general purpose weight paper suitable for photocopiers, inkjet and laser printers.
What if you need a heavier weight paper? This shoulnd’t pose a problem in any well stocked office supply or computer store. Inkjet paper also comes in 90gsm, 100gsm and higher grades. You’ll find that heavier papers give you crisper text and less ink bleed also. Do bear in mind that every inkjet printer has a maximum paper thickness it can handle. If you’re buying paper in weights of 110gsm - 125gsm consult your printer documentation before you feed very heavy paper through it - otherwise you risk seriously damaging your printer.
Apart from the weights you also have a wide variety of styles. Paper for your inkjet printer can also be purchased in bright white variants. These are designed for single sided printing of important documents or presentation pages. This type of paper is more expensive but if your goal is to impress then it’s money well spent as ther results are truly impressive.
Last but not least we have the photographic and high resolution inkjet papers. When you want to print a photograph, digital or scanned, then photo paper is your best choice.
Matte photo paper has a smooth, almost velvety, finish to it. Any image printed to a matte paper will have a richness of color and overall softness to it but won’t resemble a lab processed photograph. An image printed on matte photo paper will dry pretty quickly.
Glossy photo paper is next up. If you want the best possible results in terms of color richness, clarity and sheen then glossy inkjet paper is the way to go. This type of paper has several layers within each sheet. There are top layers to help with ink absorption and then intermediate layers to store the inkjet and prevent bleeding. This complexity leads to a higher price and some name brand glossy photo papers can be quite expensive. If you want high quality results be prepared to part with a bit more cash.
Before you shop analyze your wants versus your needs - it’ll save you a lot of cash.

If you are considering buying a guillotine style paper cutter you have most likely discovered that there are literally hundreds of options available on the market. However, not all paper cutters are created equal. This article is designed to give you a set of guidelines that will help in deciding what paper cutter is the best fit for your needs. Here are four things to consider:
1. Size: The first thing to consider when choosing a paper trimmer to fit your needs is size. Trimmers are available with blades as short as 4″ and as long as 36″. A quick survey of the items that you need to cut will help to narrow the selection of machines that will best fit your needs. In addition to the length of the blade, it is also important to consider the size of the cutting table. If you are going to cut larger items it is extremely helpful to have a cutting table that is large enough to support the entire document.
2. Cutting Capacity: The second thing to consider when choosing a paper cutter is the capacity of paper that you need to cut. Higher quality paper cutters will have sharper blades and will be capable of cutting larger amounts of paper. Keep in mind that even if you aren’t going to need to cut larger stacks of paper, cutters with higher capacities will generally be more efficient at cutting individual sheets of paper. It is also important to remember that you will get a much higher cut quality if you don’t cut the full rated capacity of the trimmer.
3. Safety Features: Depending on the environment where you intend to use your cutter, safety may be the most important thing to consider when choosing your trimmer. In order to protect users, guillotine cutters should have several safety features. If the machine you are considering doesn’t include these features you might think twice before buying it. All guillotine-cutters should include a tension spring to prevent the blade from falling when in the raised position. Machines without this tension spring are not safe and should not be used. You should also look to make sure that the model you are considering includes a blade lock that allows you to secure the blade in the closed position when it is not in use. A blade guard should also be included. At a minimum, a small metal bar should prevent users from sliding fingers under the blade. However, ultra sharp cutting machines capable of handling large capacities should have plastic blade guards that make it impossible (or virtually impossible to slide your fingers under the blade). Keep in mind; even with these safety features it is essential to be extremely careful when using your paper cutter.
4. Other Features: After considering size, capacity and safety there are several other features that are useful to look for. Larger models should have clamps to hold the paper in place while the stack is being cut. Without these clamps larger stacks can slip when being cut keeping the finished product from being square. Another thing to keep in mind is that most models will have measurement markings to help you align your documents. It is extremely helpful if these markings run the entire length of the cutting table to help ensure that you get your documents square before cutting them. Finally, machines that have an adjustable paper stop make cutting large volumes of paper simpler than ever. However, it is important to ensure that the paper stop is solid and square or else it won’t be helpful.
If you consider these four features when choosing a guillotine paper trimmer, you will be able to find a model that will best fit your needs. Keep in mind that you may not need all of these features for your office and that models that include all of the best features will certainly be more expensive than those without these features. Thus, it is up to you to find the best possible balance between cost and features to best meet your needs.
